Labor and Employment Secretary Patricia a. Sto. Tomas said Filipinos based in the United States are actively supporting the Department’s Classroom Galing sa Mamamayang Pilipino Abroad (CGMA) projectas she cited the 177 confirmed pledges received last year by the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Washington, D.C. (POLO-WDC).

Labor Attache Arturo Sodusta of the POLO-WDC reported to Sto. Tomas that they are working to raise enough funds to finance the construction of 50 classrooms in 2005. “Last year, Filipinos, Filipino-Americans, and Filipino organizations based in the US were among the most active supporters of our donate-a-classroom or CGMA project,” Sto. Tomas said.

Launched in 2003, the program has constructed and donated some 95 classrooms to various schools nationwide. Another 150 of the seven-by-seven meter classrooms are currently being constructed. The program, Sto. Tomas said, addresses shortage of classrooms and generates jobs in the countryside.
