The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is encouraging workers to report employers who do not comply with labor standards as it vows to enforce its new order against labor-only contracting and other illegal contracting practices.
“We should all be united in fighting for our rights. Help the labor department in its campaign against contractualization and in protecting worker’s rights and welfare by being our eyes and ears on employers who do not comply with the new labor standards,” Undersecretary Joel Maglunsod told the Solidarity of Cavite Workers Forum in Rosario, Cavite over the weekend.
The DOLE senior official added that Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III has formed a working group that will supervise inspection teams while labor groups will be deputized to make sure that establishments and companies nationwide abide by the newly signed order.
“Here in Cavite, the minimum wage is around P360 pesos. This cannot sustain the day to day expenses for food and shelter of a family. However, despite this situation, some employers are still unable to provide proper wages and benefits for the workers. This is unacceptable. You should stand up and immediately report these violations to our DOLE offices,” Maglunsod said.
He stressed that workers who have been experiencing abuse and have undergone unlawful employment arrangements as such as forcefully signing vague, blank, conditional, and other illicit forms of contracts and waivers should immediately report and call the DOLE Hotline 1349.
BWC Director Dr. Teresita Cucueco said the working group is reviewing the guidelines in implementing and conducting inspections on various establishments.
“DOLE continues to review the guidelines in the conduct of inspections. Laws on safety and health standards were also obsolete as of this moment that is why we are doing our best to clear and add provisions to secure workers’ employment and safety,” Cucueco said.
She pointed out the need for safety officers who have knowledge on OSH and must be prepared during danger and emergency situations in the workplaces.
