The DOLE Regional Office No. 12 had a different idea of a Labor Day celebration when it organized a sports event, a first, for the Industry Tripartite Council and the DOLE Regional Coordinating Council. Regional Director Ofelia B. Domingo, in a post-Labor Day report, said she thought of the sports event as a feature of the regional office’s commemoration of Labor Day to highlight the various Industry Tripartite Councils’ strong support to the DOLE and its programs and services. There are organized ITCs in the region’s wholesale and retail; plantation; manufacturing; fishing; academe; tourism; and construction industries. The sports event, held at the South Cotabato Sports Complex in Koronadal featured games in basketball, volleyball, sack race, and tug of war. South Cotabato Governor Daisy Avance Fuentes, who was one of the guests of honor during the Labor Day celebration, lauded the DOLE for the sports event and used the occasion to remind employers to share what is fair to their employees for them (employers) to continue to be successful in business. “Your employees need to be treated equally and as you continue to share your blessings to them, they will also continue to be productive for your industry,” the governor said. DOLE assistant secretary Ma. Joji V. Aragon, who also graced the sports and other Labor Day events in the region, said in her message to the participating ITCs that the activity can boost the DOLE’s efforts to achieve the outcome of sustained cooperation between labor and employers. “This sports fest will definitely unite the different ITCs in the region which could translate to stronger support to the DOLE,” she said. Meanwhile, Director Domingo reported that the Labor Day job fairs in Region 12 resulted to 1,434 job seekers hired-on-the-spot (HOTS), a hiring rate of 51.97 percent, the highest in the DOLE’s 16 regions. The DOLE job fairs were held simultaneously at the KCC Mall of Gensan and SM City General Santos. A total of 3,575 male and female job seekers tried their luck to find work during the Labor Day job fairs. Of this number, 2,759 were qualified, and of those qualified, 1,434 were hired-on-the-spot, 1,242 of them men, while 434 were women,” said Domingo happily. She said the continued partnership of the DOLE with various industries and sectors made the success possible. “We are so happy to note that we have reached our target and helped many residents of SOCCSKSARGEN to land in decent jobs. We will continue to partner with local and overseas employers to help more job seekers in the region,” Director Domingo said. END/KTurnos
