Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz yesterday announced that five maritime training courses of the National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP), the government’s maritime training and research institution attached to the DOLE, is now open for enrolment after the five courses were accorded full-course accreditation by the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA).
“The MARINA accreditation of the five maritime training courses is anchored on the NMP’s pursuit to measure up to the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention standards in its offering of maritime training courses,” said Baldoz.
Citing a report of NMP Executive Director Manuel Roldan, Baldoz said the five training courses are aimed at skilling and up-grading enrolees through specialization programs.
“There’s something new in the accredited courses. They integrate values vital to social transformation for both merchant marine officers and ratings,” she said.
The five MARINA-accredited courses are Basic Training (BT) with four (4) modules, namely, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF), Personal Survival Techniques (PST), Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR), Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Abuse in the Maritime Sector; (PADAMS); Advanced Training in Fire Fighting (ATFF); Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boat (PSCRB); Ship Simulator Bridge Teamwork with Bridge Resource Management (SSBT with BRM); and Medical Emergency First Aid (MEFA).
“The five courses are designed to respond to the needs of the Filipino seafarers and the industry,” Baldoz also said, adding that of the 1.2 million seafarers that man ships all over the world, 25 percent are graduates of NMP courses.
He added that MARINA also approved the instructors, assessors, and supervisors who will be handling the above-mentioned courses.
Baldoz invited interested seafarers who want to take the said courses to enrol at the NMP, whose campus is in Tacloban City.
“We assure those seafarers who are interested in availing the NMP training courses that we have complied with all the requirements for MARINA accreditation to ensure a complete and effective implementation under international standards,” Roldan said.
