The dispute between Del Monte Philippines, Inc. – Bugo Cannery and the Del Monte Bugo Cannery Labor Union has been settled following successful efforts of the Regional Conciliation and Mediation Branch X, NCMB Executive Director Reynaldo R. Ubaldo has reported to Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz.
“The company and the union agreed to remand their issues to the grievance machinery”, Ubaldo further said.
The dispute arose from the disciplinary action of suspension for thirty days imposed on Edwardo Valencia, which the union claimed to be unjust as it did not follow proper procedures. The union filed a preventive mediation on 17 May 2013.
On 28 June, after a series of conciliation conferences, the parties agreed to the proposal of RCMB X Director Florido Akut, Jr. to remand their dispute to the company’s grievance machinery, in accordance with Article 26 of their CBA.
Ubaldo lauded the efforts of Akut in guiding the parties to find a suitable forum in addressing their issues.
RCMB X continues to monitor the progress of both parties.
Del Monte Philippines, Inc., located in Bugo, Cagayan De Oro, operates the largest pineapple plantation in the world.
Del Monte Bugo Cannery Labor Union represents 1,500 regular employees of the company for collective bargaining purposes. It is affiliated with the All Workers Alliance Trade Unions (AWATU).
