Dressmaker, housewives association, national winners in DOLE Kabuhayan Awards

A dressmaker and a housewives association emerged as national winners in the labor department’s Kabuhayan Awards, or the search for outstanding DOLE-assisted livelihood projects nationwide.

Teresita G. Lania from Soccsksargen Region was recognized as the national champion in individual category for exhibiting exemplary performance in sustaining her Lania Dress Shop and received P50,000 cash award.

In the group category, the housewives association called Cassava Growers and Processors Association (CAGAPA) from Zamboanga Peninsula Region bagged the national champion with its sustainable business on cassava chips making and received P100,000 cash award.

“Lubos akong nagpapasalamat sa DOLE for granting me livelihood assistance na naging gabay at supporta ko upang mapaunlad ang aking kabuhayan at makatulong sa iba. Nawa’y patuloy kong mapagbuti ang aking nasimulan,” Lania said.

Lania, a 53 year-old dressmaker, was selected as the Kabuhayan champion for her feat in expanding her dress shop from the P5,000 worth of livelihood assistance from DOLE in 2015 which enabled her to sustain and improve her business. Lania is now employing 10 workers from her community.

The CAGAPA, on the other hand, is a marginalized group of housewives that received P283,000 livelihood aid from DOLE in 2014, which enabled them to  enhance their business venture on cassava chips making. From 14 members at the start, the association now has 129 members. Also, their products are now being sold at various pasalubong centers, groceries, sari-sari stores and schools, and this has resulted in generating employment for more people in their locality.

Acting Secretary Renato Ebarle commended the awardees for their hard work and assured them of sustained assistance for the success of their livelihood undertakings.

“Rest assured that DOLE will continue to provide technical assistance, trainings, and other support services to our livelihood beneficiaries to further sustain and achieve success in their livelihood ventures. We hope that you will continue to inspire others and help us move forward in achieving our grand goal of inclusive growth and poverty reduction,” Ebarle said.

Among other awardees in the individual category are Warlito Mina of Lito Mina Auto Repair from Region 9 and Aina Ibrahim of Panabo Night Market Street Food Vending from Region 11 who bagged the 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

Region 11’s 8’s Magic Garment Association’s garment making business emerged 2nd place in group category followed by the Bauko Organic Practitioners Credit Cooperative from Cordillera Administrative Region’s CED Vegetable Enriched Noodles Production at 3rd place.

DOLE regional and provincial focal persons and implementers were also conferred with Plaque of Recognition for their vital contribution to the growth and the sustainability of livelihood projects of ‘Kabuhayan winners’.

The Kabuhayan Awards is an annual event organized by the Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns in coordination with DOLE Regional Offices to reward the relentless efforts and perseverance of beneficiaries in sustaining the gains of the DOLE-funded livelihood projects. ###Abegail De Vega
