The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has awarded emergency employment to 80 locals in selected municipalities in the province of Masbate to help rebuild community facilities destroyed by Typhoon Nina.
Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said the emergency assistance is under the Tulong Pangkabuhayan Sa Ating Displaced at Disadvantage Workers (TUPAD) program of DOLE which provides short-term and immediate employment for victims of natural calamities for a minimum of 10 but not to exceed a maximum of 30 working days, depending on the nature of work to be performed.
DOLE Bicol regional director Atty. Ma. Karina Perida-Trayvilla led the awarding of the TUPAD Work Program for the beneficiaries held in separate venues at the Local Government Units of Milagros and Batuan in the province of, Masbate. Each have 40 worker-beneficiaries or a total of Php 212,000.00 budget for wages under the 10-day work program.
The hired worker-beneficiaries will undertake community work and cleaning and rebuilding operations needed by the LGUs while their wages, insurance and protective gears will be shouldered by DOLE under the TUPAD Program.
Aside from the awarding of the check for salaries payment, DOLE Masbate also conducted a short orientation about the objectives of the DOLE TUPAD Program and on basic worker’s safety and health particularly the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while doing the community work.
“We always incorporate basic safety and health in our TUPAD since worker’s safety is one of our priorities. We in DOLE prays for the fast recovery of the community through the direct intervention and assistance of the national government,” RD Perida-Trayvilla added.
It can be noted that last December 2016, Masbate and other provinces in the Bicol Region were hit by typhoon Nina were hundreds of families have lost their houses, and millions of peso amount of crops and properties were destroyed.
