The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has recently granted a total of P1,017,000 worth of livelihood assistance to barangay Teresita, municipality of Mansalay in Oriental Mindoro for the Sack Making Project of Teresita Farmers Association (TFA).
The check was issued by DOLE MIMAROPA Regional Director Alvin M. Villamor through the Oriental Mindoro Field Office for the procurement of raw materials, equipment, and tools intended for the operation of sack-making projects proposed by 186 members of TFA to the labor department.
“Since there is no sack making in the area (District 2 of the province), most of the farmers are buying sacks from other towns and at times even outside the province. This is also useful to residents and workers associations locally engaged in the manufacture of feeds and organic fertilizers / vermi-cast fertilizers,” RD Villamor said.
DOLE Oriental Mindoro Field Officer Engr. Juliana Ortega encouraged the officers and members of the TFA to sustain the sack making project and grow it into a community enterprise for employment generation in their barangay.
Ortega also pointed out that DOLE, in close coordination with the Municipal Government of Mansalay, through its Public Employment Service Office (PESO) and barangay Teresita officials, will continuously monitor the operation of the business for three years.
She also said that DOLE-FO is also ready to provide guidance and technical assistance to the business operations of the project.
In return, TFA President Alex V. Quinones thanked DOLE for its trust to their association, and said that the members and officers of the association will ensure the sustainability of the project.
The DOLE Field Office in Mansalay affirmed that the sack-making project fits the needs of the farmers not only in the municipalities of Mansalay, Bulalacao, and Roxas but also in the entire province of Oriental Mindoro.
