DOLE Region 7’s six simultaneous job fairs on Labor Day last Friday produced 456 job applicants hired-on-the-spot (HOTS), said Regional Director Exequiel R. Sarcauga in a reported to Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz. “Our job fair in Lapu-lapu City tallied the highest number of HOTS at 159, all for local positions. The job fair at SM-Consolacion, Cebu came next with 100 job applicants hired-on-the-spot. At the job fair held at the Social Hall of the Cebu Provincial Capitol, a total of 98 HOTS were recorded. At SM City Trade Hall, the job fair produced 88 HOTS. At the Abellana Sports Complex, four applicants got new jobs overseas. In Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, the HOTS recorded included six for local positions and one for an overseas job,” Sarcauga said. The DOLE regional official expressed optimism that the number of HOTS recorded will still increase. “We are waiting for the final results of other applicants who have the potential in the respective positions they applied for,” he said. Ma. Nancy Abad, chief of the regional office’s Technical Support Services Division-Employment Welfare, said there were 2,081 applicants considered ‘near-hires’ at the Labor Day job fairs in the region. “In business process management, for example, ‘near-hires’ were the job applicants recommended for simulation and training about the products and services of the companies they applied with. In other fields, the job applicants were asked to undergo trade tests before they can begin,” said Abad. According to Abad, ‘near-hires’ were also required by the companies to comply with medical requirements and background check when needed. Once they have complied with the requirements, the employers will finally decide, but it’s more or less a go for them, depending on the participants’ level of experience and expertise, she said. Among the 6,427 applicants interviewed, 6,287 of them met the employers’ minimum requirements. On 1 May 2015, the region-wide job fairs conducted in coordination with the Public Service Employment Offices (PESOs) highlighted the DOLE 7’s Labor Day celebration. Another highlight was the JobStart Philippines’s Forum which no less than President Benigno S. Aquino III and Secretary Baldoz had visited.
