Bello honors Garcia, distinguished movie industry worker

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III joins the Filipinos in mourning the passing of Philippine movie industry’s distinguished actor and director Eddie Garcia.

“We express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of Eddie Garcia.  He is an epitome of a consummate entertainment industry worker whose professionalism, hard work and commitment as an artist remained unfaltering to the very end,” Bello said.

Bello presented yesterday to the bereaved family memorabilia of Garcia’s commendation by the House of Representatives for his meritorious contribution to the country’s arts and entertainment sector.

The labor secretary, who was then 1BAP Partylist Representative in 16th Congress bestowed Garcia a commendation through House Resolution No. 2355 which “recognized with deep pride and appreciation [his] immense contribution to the Philippine entertainment industry.”

The same House Resolution authored by Bello during his term in Congress commended Eddie, or Jesus Garcia Verchez, for his stellar career that spanned over 70 years and with over 600 movie and television works to his credit. It also recognized Garcia’s service with the Philippine Scouts, a stint that brought him to Okinawa, Japan during World War II as a military policeman.

It also cited Garcia’s distinction as the most awarded and nominated actor in the long history of Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences, including his international recognition as Best Actor in the 55th Asia-Pacific Film Festival held in Macau.

Two days before his death, he was honored by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, a society of industry and academe film critics, as best actor at the 42nd Urian Awards.

“Throughout his stellar and memorable career, Mr. Eddie Garcia had kept a very private life and had never figured in any public controversy or intrigue, and thus, serves as a role model for our youth that modesty in real life can co-exist with popularity and success in one’s profession,” Bello said. # # # GSR
