Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz yesterday announced the tentative schedule of nationwide DOLE job fairs for the first six months of 2016, saying graduates this year could look up to DOLE to provide them assistance if and when they plan to enter the country’s labor market of 41.379 million, which has expanded by 2.5 percent from 2010 to 2014.

“Our efforts continue to facilitate employment of our workers. Job fairs are one of the more tested and effective strategies in employment facilitation,” Baldoz said.

“Every year, we are strengthening our efforts to improve our employment facilitation strategies and mechanisms, as laid down by President Benigno Aquino III in his 22-Point Labor and Employment Agenda, in order to address the country’s job-skills mismatch problem,” she added.

Baldoz said that as the Aquino III administration comes to a close, she is happy to report that youth unemployment is on the downtrend, with the number of unemployed 15-24 year olds settling at 1.139 million based on the October 2015 Labor Force Survey of the Philippine Statistics Authority, a decrease of 3.1 percent  from October 2010’s 1.378 million.

“Admittedly, this number is still high, but we are encouraged by the positive results of government interventions, such as our job fairs, during the last five years,” Baldoz said.

She said job fairs are an efficient way to look for employment as numerous companies gather in one venue to facilitate easier search for qualified workers. Aside from DOLE-organized or –sponsored job fairs, there are companies and institutions that conduct job fairs.

Like in the previous five years, the DOLE is announcing its schedule of job fairs in coordination with participating employers, academic institutions, and other government offices through Public Employment Service Offices (PESOs) of sponsoring regions.
