At job fair for OFW returnees from Libya, DOLE notes many applicants still prefer work abroad

A higher salary, mainly, compels many overseas Filipino workers who have been repatriated from Libya to apply for an overseas job.

This was the observation of Director Anna Dominique Tutay of the Bureau of Local Employment as she reported to Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz that a majority of the 384 applicants who registered at the DOLE job fair for Libya repatriates, held yesterday at the Occupational Safety and Health Center in Quezon City, still looked for overseas jobs either in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Uzbekistan, UK, Turkmenistan, and Kuwait.

“We note that applicants still prefer overseas jobs which pay salaries four to five times higher than local jobs. For those who have three or more years of work experience, they could not afford to accept lower income because they have been used to a higher standard of living while working abroad. The law of rising expectations applies in their case,” said Director Tutay in her report to the labor and employment chief.

Baldoz, however, declared the job fair a success, saying that the job fair is intended to give them the opportunity to make decision where to work and is solely a worker’s prerogative.

“The main point is that we make available to them the job vacancies, local and overseas to shorten their job search,” said Baldoz.

“Nais naming ipaalam sa ating mga OFWs na kaagapay ninyo kami sa inyong pagbabalik mula sa Libya. Ito ang unang pagkakataon na  nangyari ito.  At ito ay mauulit pa depende sa mga lugar kung saan maraming OFW returnees  mula sa Libya,”  she declared in Filipino at the job fair’s opening ceremony.

Acknowledging the local companies and the recruitment agencies which joined the job fair, she assured the applicants who trooped to the job fair that these were legal and legitimate companies licensed by government authorities. There were 14 local companies with 5,601 vacancies which joined the job fair and the same number of overseas recruitment agencies that brought in 6,659 overseas jobs at the said job fair.

The overseas recruitment agencies that participated in the job fair are the following: Career Planners Specialists International: EDI Staffbuilders International, Inc.; Corporation; Gulf Asia International Corporation; Industrial Personnel & Management Services, Inc.; Krona International Service Systems, Inc.; LBS Recruitment Solutions Corp.;  MPL Intl. Corporation; Omanfil International Manpower Development Corporation;  Orange Intl. Recruitment Services; RRJM International Manpower Services; STB-DJLHumanlink, Inc.; and  YWA Human Resource Corporation.

Two local construction giants with international operations, Engineering Equipment, Inc. and D.M. Consunji, Inc. also joined the job fair.

During the activity, Baldoz urged the OFW returnees from Libya to choose from the  package of comprehensive reintegration assistance and services under  the Assist WELL Program which ensures that returning OFWs  who voluntarily sign up for repatriation, or those who are compelled to go home under mandatory repatriation due to crises or emergency situations, are successfully reintegrated in the mainstream of Philippine society.

“You can choose from the packages of assistance available under the Assist WELL Program,” she said. The ‘WELL’ in Assist WELL stands for Welfare, Employment, Legal, and Livelihood services.

A component of the National Reintegration Program for OFWs, the DOLE adopted the Assist WELL Program to ensure the successful reintegration of OFWs repatriated from crisis or emergency situations, pursuant to relevant alert level systems of the national government. Baldoz established the program under DOLE Department Order No. 139, Series of 2014.
