Close to 7,000 job seekers have been hired on-the-spot at the various jobs fairs conducted across the country from January to March this year, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) today reported.

A report reaching Labor and Employment Secretary Patricia A. Sto. Tomas said that on top of those hired on-the-spot (HOTS) numbering about 6,815 job seekers, some 5,369 other applicants were further screened and subsequently hired by the participating employers after the fairs.

Citing a report from the Bureau of Local Employment (BLE), Sto. Tomas said that a total of 177 jobs fairs, or about two per day, were held from January to March 2006 as part of the DOLE’s series of fairs conducted in coordination with Local Government Units (LGUs) nationwide.

The BLE report indicated that of the total 6,815 ‘HOTS,’ 5,834 were hired by local companies, and 981 for overseas jobs. On the other hand, 5,050 of the 5,369 applicants hired after further screening were placed in local positions while 319 in overseas jobs.

Meanwhile, Sto. Tomas said that pending the consolidation of results, more applicants are expected to have landed jobs as a result of the jobs fairs held from April to June.

She said that the DOLE, in coordination with LGUs, scheduled some 45 jobs fairs nationwide for the month of June alone, on top of 42 earlier in May, and 38 in April.
